Chapter 5-Stay tuned…..

James gradually woke up.  His head was bandaged, but he was in his bedroom and the sun was shining brightly.  He tried to sit up but his head was throbbing so much that a cry of pain escaped his lips.  He heard movement outside of the bedroom, and instantly became quiet.  He held his breath and listened as whoever or whatever made its way to the door.  The door swung open.  “Hey, how are you feeling?” Alyssa asked James.  “Oh man…I am happy to see you, I thought I had lost you for good.  What happened?  How did we get back here”? James questioned.   Alyssa responded “I had locked myself in the freezer at work after one of those infected attacked a customer.  I was watching them waiting for a chance to run when you crashed into the building.  The truck ran them over and I was able to get out of the freezer.  I started to run past the truck when I saw that it was you, and that you were hurt.  I pushed you aside and tried to take you to the hospital but the hospital was in chaos so I just came home and had the neighbor help me get you upstairs.” 

     “What do you mean the hospital was in chaos? ” James asked Alyssa.  “I mean, I pulled into the parking lot, and there were people running away from the hospital.  I drove up to the entrance, started to get out of the truck when I looked inside the hospital and saw that there were people trying to get out.  They were banging on the glass, but it had been locked from the outside.  A few seconds later I saw a group of infected come through a door and head straight towards the people trying to get out.  It was horrible, there was blood everywhere.  They were screaming for mercy but the infected just tore at their flesh.” 

“Do they know what happened”? James asked.  “You mean, what is happening, and no, they still don’t” she replied.  “What do you mean happening”? he asked.  “Maybe you should watch this.” she said as she turned on the television.  James wasn’t sure what he was looking at, but he knew it was bad.  He was looking at a city block.  Half of it was on fire, and there was a group of people standing out in the street fighting.  They had chains, bats, and even a few guns.  James watched in shock as person after person fell to the ground and was immediately jumped on by the infected.  He couldn’t believe that they were showing this on television.  The most shocking thing was that after a few minutes the people who had just been slaughtered began to get back up.  The news cut back to a disheveled looking anchor.  “What you have just witnessed was footage taken earlier today by our news chopper.”  the anchor said.   “Authorities are still uncertain of the cause, but they have instigated a mandatory curfew.  If you are seen outside of shelter after 6:00pm this evening you will be shot, no questions asked.” 

“I can’t believe this is happening, I hope they contain it to the city” James said.  “James, maybe you should look outside” Alyssa told him.  James slowly made his way from the bed, he pulled the blinds and to his horror saw that the building was surrounded by infected.  Not only that, but the entire block look destroyed.  He could see smoke coming from the ruins of the apartment complex next door.  He started to say something when there was a crash in the kitchen.  James felt his heart skip a beat.  He started to head towards the bedroom door when Alyssa grabbed his arm and told him “Calm down James, it’s just the Neighbor, he helped me carry you up here  but by the time we got you into the bed, it wasn’t safe enough to go outside, so he had to stay here”.
